About the Team:


Verizon Media is looking for engineers to join the Verizon Media Hadoop team in Sunnyvale, CA. Verizon Media/Yahoo is the birthplace of Hadoop and has the largest Hadoop install in the world. The server count has grown from a few hundred nodes to over 30,000 in the past few years. We have over 400,000 cores that process nearly 300PB of data spread over 20 clusters running a mix of Hadoop, Storm, and Spark.
 
About the Role:


We are looking for motivated operations engineers to help build and enhance solutions to ensure the availability & reliability of the systems managed. If you are interested in distributed systems, love to solve complex and challenging problems, can work independently, and want to participate in some of the most exciting open-source projects, we want to hear from you! If you want to learn about Hadoop this is the job for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Work on a combination of tasks & projects such as analyzing and assisting in the resolution of production software/infrastructure issues and instrumenting reporting, deployment tooling, and monitoring solutions to increase the operability of our larger-scale infrastructure

  • Understand all aspects of Verizon Media's Big Data Stack and learn select components in detail

  • Work closely with engineering, operations, and Hadoop users to engineer cutting-edge solutions that allow Verizon Media to answer today's most challenging big data questions

  • Document processes, systems, and their associated configurations

Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Computer Science degree or equivalent

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong, methodical troubleshooting skills.

  • Interest in a technical role involving platform and infrastructure operation and management.

  • A desire to learn and perform individual research to improve technical proficiency.

  • The ability to use an object oriented programming language like Java or C++ & scripting languages like Python or Perl

  • Strong understanding of Linux systems - System administration experience is a plus, whether that’s from course work, time spent as a systems administrator for your campus computer lab, side projects.

  • Demonstrated skills in problem diagnosis and resolution as well as troubleshooting techniques of basic issues

  • Knowledgeable of operating system fundamentals and computer architecture

  • Able to understand network protocols at a basic level

  • Experienced with systems programming concepts like C, sockets, virtual memory, and the process life cycle
